Shape of Belonging
Ritual performed at Introductions, at Root Division on September 10, 2022.
September 1 – September 24, 2022
2 hours; 12 participants
Juried by Lian Ladia, Genevieve Quick, Leila Weefur

I created a series of intimate rituals for people who have left or been cast out of a religious community, or had a major shift in that relationship. Grounded in my own somatic practice, I asked reflective questions about what it felt like to detach from the community, and then find a new sense of belonging. Participants responded to these prompts with embodied, abstract descriptions on their experiences, which I assembled into a collective poem.
I formed a small cup for each person, guided by the specific reflections they shared. Each participant used this cup to drink a small sip of a special drink of their choice. We drank in honor of their leaving, and toasted to their new felt sense of belonging.
