Curated by Karen Cheung

For chuseok last year, our collective dyed our nails with bongseonhwa. That was the last time I saw one of our members, Julie Moon. Watching the red line of the dye travel up my nail, I am witnessing the space between now and that day grow.
.
I celebrated dong ji for the first time with our collective. Dong ji is the winter solstice, the darkest night of the year. One of the traditions for this holiday is to eat patjuk. The number of saealsim served in this red bean soup corresponds to the eater’s age.
.
When I spoke with a mudang three years ago, she said she saw my grandmother’s spirit around me, and recommended that I perform jesa for her. My grandmother loved grapefruit; I offer her grapefruit in this ritual.
